Think fax technology is dead? Think again – even with the technology advancements in telecommunications, a number of companies continue to use fax technology in their business.
While the analog fax seems to be going the way of the rotary telephone, all IP deployments have opened up a whole new world of fax capabilities. Some of these innovations were on hand at ITEXPO West in Austin, TX.
Commetrex (News - Alert) was there, as captured in this recent blog, along with sister company, NextGen (News - Alert) Communications. Both Commetrex and NextGen Communications announced the Smart ATA fax technology at the show, providing ITSPs with an opportunity to learn more about Smart ATA and what it can do for their success with fax over IP (FoIP).
Offering innovation in the fax space, Smart ATA promises to redefine the state of the art in ATA. Commetrex did more than just develop and market an ATA. The company sought to develop a fax technology that would solve major problems for users of FoIP.
The Smart ATA is actually a full-function voice-fax ATA, but extends functionality in a FoIP environment in that it solves the late-T.38 re-invite problem. Late T.38 re-invites cause the fax session to be killed if the re-invite is accepted when it should actually be rejected. As a result, the solution is known as a Smart FoIP and Smart ATA.
It also addresses the G.711 clock-synch problem, delivering improvements in the transaction success rate of 5-10 percent. It is also the industry’s first and online ATA that also offers T.38 version 3 and V.34.ITSPs currently supporting FoIP understand the challenges presented with this technology. One thing Commetrex learned at ITEXPO (News - Alert) West is that it doesn’t matter which ATA is used, they still have issues that interfere with smooth performance.
Once these industry players learned what Commetrex has done, they demonstrated their excitement in that little booth at ITEXPO, demonstrating an overwhelming response to Smart ATA. Commetrex is using its expertise in the fax space to try and solve the challenges plaguing organizations everywhere.
In a TMCnet report on ITEXPO, Commetrex is addressing the problems in the fax world that service providers continue to beg to be fixed. As a full function voice/fax ATA, Smart ATA offers extensive features, management, call control, security and even more.

CEO Commentary
"We Make FoIP Work!" I recently spoke with a vice president of engineering at a large enterprise-fax vendor. Our customer wanted to know if we had a program to establish interop certifications with IP carriers. Prior to that I had spoken with a product-management director at another large enterprise-fax server vendor (actually, our largest customer), and he wanted to know if we had
a certification lab for various gateways. I didn't have good answers to either question. We just don't have the resources and scale to make a reasonable dent
in the massive numbers ...
Smart FoIPTM
Smart FoIP, Commetrex' patent-applied-for technology, has been integrated into BladeWare, and is optionally available with T.38 Fax Relay and Multi-Modal Terminating Fax (MMTF) for use in SIP networks. Smart FoIP eliminates the problems caused by late-arriving T.38 re-Invites from the receiving gateway, which can cause the call to fail if the re-Invite is accepted when it should actually be rejected.
